Destination Öresund

Öresund, the strait between Denmark and Sweden, connects the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. Boat tourists enjoy guest harbors and scenery from sandy beaches to steep cliffs. Starting in Skanör, we pass Malmö, Barsebäck, Landskrona, Island of Ven, and Helsingborg, ending at Kullaberg Peninsula with its cliffs and early 20th-century lighthouse.

Skanör harbour

Falsterbo Peninsula’s white beaches are a magnificent experience with undulating sand dunes. This is Skåne’s largest nature reserve. The shallow waters of Sandbottnarna attract spawning fish such as pike, turbot, herring and grayling. In autumn, the peninsula serves as a resting place for many migratory birds from Northern Europe, which gather here before flying southward.

There’s a maximum holiday feeling here among both nature and small town idylls. Take a walk and feel the beat of mediaeval history’s wings. In the 13th century, Falsterbo and Skanör were some of Hansa’s top market towns, from which tons of salted herring were exported. In 1674 Hansa’s presence on the peninsula ceased. Churches, company houses, and castles were abandoned and pillaged for stones. The remains were gradually covered with unruly sand over time.

Now though, the little town of Skanör begins gaining momentum again – small peaceful Skanör was called ”a trendy pub El Dorado” in the newspaper Sydsvenskan, as more and more restaurants choose to open up here over recent years and many visitors come back year after year.

Skanör’s harbour offers everything from festive pub visits to calm grill evenings on the sunset walkway.
There are several golf courses nearby, as well as a thermal bath house, a bathing pier, and every possibility for just hanging out and enjoying vacation and sunshine.

Klagshamn

Our next stop is Klagshamn located on Klagshamnsudden Nature Reserve, one of Malmö’s most popular nature areas. The cape was created artificially using materials from the chalk mining and cement production that took place between 1880 and 1930. Mother nature then took over creating a beautiful coastline with cliffs, sandy beaches, and forests. The chalky soil has given rise to interesting flora with several rare plants that thrive on chalky land. Klagshamn is also important for many species of bats.

At Fiskbryggan you can enjoy a really delicious shrimp sandwich – or buy fresh fish and cook it yourself. The delightful Klagshamn seaside is just a short walk away where you can sunbathe on the beach with views over Öresundsbron bridge.

Dockan Marina is one of northern Europe’s most sheltered guest harbours. The marina is strategically located between old and new Malmö and the central station is just around the corner where you can reach Kastrup airport and Copenhagen in just half an hour.

Barsebäckshamn

Barsebäckshamn is a delightful little fishing village with roots dating back to the 1200s, when it was first mentioned as a place for fishermen and sailors. Until the beginning of the 1900s Barsebäckshamn was a significant port for trade across the Öresund strait. Traces of the dismantled 1956 railway are still left.

Today it’s mainly a popular day-trip destination. Visitors can enjoy beautiful nature with sandy beaches and promenades with fantastic views over the strait. There are plenty of opportunities for fishing, sailing, and water sports. For those who prefer land activities there are golf courses, and nice walking trails and bicycle paths. Harbour pubs and food trucks offer varied lunches and dinners where you can enjoy fresh fish, seafood, or just relax with a coffee.

It’s a beautiful walk along the coastline to Barsebäck beach and it’s also possible to rent bicycles at the harbour office.

This cosy, full-service marina can look after you and your boat all year round. It has all the practicalities and space for both small and large visiting boats. Why not stay a little longer and take care of laundry or leave your boat for adventures on land? The harbour also offers winter storage and is locked and guarded at night. If your boat needs maintenance, there’s a boatyard, rigging service, slipway and mast crane. The small cottage village in the harbour puts its stamp on the area, which has a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

It started in the 1980s with fishing huts, which gradually developed into summer cottages. Many residents are there all summer. There are three restaurants and barbecue areas, but if you want even more choice, Landskrona town centre and train station are just a couple of kilometres away.
